A booklet on the performance of State Level Public Enterprises for the year 2008-09

In spite of the global financial meltdown and consequent domestic recession, the Public Sector Undertakings, administered by the Industries Department of the Government of Kerala, have registered excellent growth and commendable performances during 2008-09. There is an increase of 16 percent in the turnover and 111 percent increase in profit compared to the previous year. This is achieved when the Indian industrial sector has registered a growth rate of 2.4 percent as per the Index of Industrial Production. This achievement is more significant in view of the proposal of the present UPA government to disinvest up to 49% of shares of profit making central PSUs. During the last three years of the LDF Government, these units had increased their turnover and the sector as a whole was making profits continuously.

This thirty year old magazine caters to the needs of industrialist, entrepreneurs, department employees and the trading community. VyavasayaKeralam is published by the Bureau of Industrial Promotion (K-Bip) which is an autonomous body of the Kerala Government, on behalf of the Director of Industries and Commerce, Government of Kerala.

This study which was jointly conducted by KPMG and TiE, is designed to develop the Indian Entrepreneurial Confidence Index, create awareness about the issues which are relevant to entrepreneurs and assess the India’s entrepreneurs confidence in their own business ecosystem.

The Public Sector Units under the Department of Industries in Kerala have made an amazing turnaround during the year 2006-07. The state level public sector industries registered an unprecedented growth within a short span of time. It is unparalleled in the history of Kerala and became a true model even for the other States of India to emulate. The argument that PSUs would be a burden to the State and cannot be run in an efficient manner has been totally disproved. Public Sector Units can compete with private sectors and are capable of delivering if employees are motivated, management is made professional and policies are pro-active.
