Kerala to ask for more central public sector units
Kerala will ask the central government to set up more public sector units and centre-state joint ventures, Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem said. He said he would discuss the demands with Defence Minister A K Antony and Heavy Industries Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. “During the previous government, Kerala got five joint ventures and three central public sector units. State-run power major NTPC today said it has acquired a 44.6 per cent stake in Kerala-based heavy-duty transformer maker Transformers and Electricals Kerala for Rs 31.34 crore. PSUs in Kerala do better in 2008-09
The public sector units under the ministry of industries and commerce in Kerala achieved better results during 2008-09 compared to their performance in the previous year. Of Kerala’s 63 PSUs that come under the ministry of industries and commerce, 17 were inoperative at the time when the present LDF government took over. Five others are developmental agencies. The other units, comprising 37 manufacturing outfits and the KSIDC, KSIE, Sidco and Kadco improved their aggregate turnover to Rs 1,933 crore in 2008-09, up from Rs 1,638 crore in the previous year. The net profit of these 41 units moved up from Rs 80.31 crore in 2007-08 to Rs 169.45 crore in 2008-09.

In spite of recessionary conditions, the public sector enterprises under the Kerala Industries Department are set to make higher profits during the current financial year, according to a review done here on Friday. Khadi workers likely to get hike in wages

Kerala to revive two ailing state owned companies
Kerala is to revive two ailing state-owned companies, Steel Complex Ltd (SCL) and Kerala Soaps and Oils Limited (KSOL), both located in Kozhikode, says Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem. As a result of this revival package, all the 195 employees at SCL will retain their jobs, while 80 new jobs would be created at KSOL. Handlooms need to be operational round the year
The handloom industry, which normally finds buyers only during the festival seasons, is in for a new initiative that will enable the sector to open up to newer markets. As part of the efforts to instill more attention and lure customers, a Handloom Show and Handloom Buyer-Seller Meet are to be held in Thiruvananthapuram.

The Kerala Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO), a public sector unit which provides infrastructure facilities and marketing support for small industrial units in the State, has signed a memorandum of understanding with SRMB Udyog Limited, a Rs. 450-crore TMT bar manufacturing company, for marketing its products in the State. Industries Minister Elamaram Karim, speaking on the occasion, said that the tie-up signalled the beginning of the diversification of Kerala SIDCO’s activities. This State public sector company had been in loss until a couple of years ago, but it had now become one of the profit-making units under the Industries Department, he said.

The Kerala government will set up an electronics park in Kasargod district, state Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem said here Friday. The park will come up near the proposed strategic electronic manufacturing factory of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the foundation stone for which will be laid Saturday. Surcharge will hurt industrial sector: Karim
The Electricity Regulatory Commission’s decision to impose a surcharge of 50 paise per unit will have a direct bearing on the industrial sector, Minister for Industries Elamaram Karim has said.
Mr.Karim told mediapersons here on Monday evening that the surcharge would be an additional burden on the industries which were already reeling under the 25 per cent power cut. The real impact had to be studied. It had been decided to revive the 10 per cent price preference scheme for small scale industrial units. The scheme was stopped by the UDF government in 2005. The scheme would be in force till March 31, 2012.

A Handloom Show 2008 designed to showcase the handloom products of the Trivandrum Cluster to the buyers and the textile designers from the neighbouring states would be organised for two days from October 17 in Thiruvananthapuram. (HAL), a premier aviation company and leading public sector undertaking, Navaratna, is planning to set up a Strategic Electronics Manufacturing factory on 200 acres of land in the Kinfra Industrial Park at Seethangoli in Kasaragod district. Electronic hubs to be set up
