State to use IT services to promote small industries
Industries Minister Elamaram Karim has said the government plans to tap into the strength of IT-enabled Services (ITeS) to promote small industries. He was addressing the inaugural function of the Kerala Agri-Food Technology Meet at the Lulu International Convention Centre here on Friday. “The government is evolving a system by which all entrepreneurs can use IT-enabled services to reach the world and showcase their products. Small-scale industries, which need less land and generate plenty of employment, are ideal for the State. Industrialization drive in Kerala

KSIDC conducting feasibility study: Minister
The State Government is exploring the possibility of a `north-south express railway corridor’, parallel to the existing one. The railway corridor is planned as an alternative to the North-South Express Highway project, which had to be shelved following public opposition. State-run power major NTPC today said it has acquired a 44.6 per cent stake in Kerala-based heavy-duty transformer maker Transformers and Electricals Kerala for Rs 31.34 crore. PSUs in Kerala do better in 2008-09
The public sector units under the ministry of industries and commerce in Kerala achieved better results during 2008-09 compared to their performance in the previous year. Of Kerala’s 63 PSUs that come under the ministry of industries and commerce, 17 were inoperative at the time when the present LDF government took over. Five others are developmental agencies. The other units, comprising 37 manufacturing outfits and the KSIDC, KSIE, Sidco and Kadco improved their aggregate turnover to Rs 1,933 crore in 2008-09, up from Rs 1,638 crore in the previous year. The net profit of these 41 units moved up from Rs 80.31 crore in 2007-08 to Rs 169.45 crore in 2008-09.

Khadi workers likely to get hike in wages

Kerala is to revive two ailing state-owned companies, Steel Complex Ltd (SCL) and Kerala Soaps and Oils Limited (KSOL), both located in Kozhikode, says Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem. Kerala beedi industry seeks rehab package

Surcharge will hurt industrial sector: Karim
The Electricity Regulatory Commission’s decision to impose a surcharge of 50 paise per unit will have a direct bearing on the industrial sector, Minister for Industries Elamaram Karim has said.
Mr.Karim told mediapersons here on Monday evening that the surcharge would be an additional burden on the industries which were already reeling under the 25 per cent power cut. The real impact had to be studied. It had been decided to revive the 10 per cent price preference scheme for small scale industrial units. The scheme was stopped by the UDF government in 2005. The scheme would be in force till March 31, 2012.

Pharma firm on revival path
Industries Minister Elamaram Karim has called upon the Kerala State Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited (KSDP) to improve its performance and reach a level where it could ensure adequate drug supply to the public health sector and compete with private pharmaceuticals in the general market.
Presiding over the inauguration of the Rs.20 crore-renovation project of the State government for KSDP at Kalavoor on Thursday, Mr. Karim said KSDP was being revived from the brink of closure. However, the government could not continue to prop it up using money from the exchequer.

Rs 255-crore makeover for khadi sector
The Khadi industry is all set to get another face-lift. The government has decided to invest Rs 255 crore on a three-pronged strategy for the sector’s development. The target population for the scheme is about 40,000 people across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh.

Khadi Board will procure raw cotton: Kareem
Industry Minister Elamaram Kareem said that the Kerala Khadi Board would be entrusted with the responsibility of procuring the raw cotton required by the Khadi sector in the state. Inaugurating the Flag Ship project of the Khadi and Village Industries Association at Avenissery here on Friday, he said that procurement of cotton during the crop season has become necessary following the decision of the Central Government to export cotton resulting in the shortage of quality cotton in the country.

Kerala likely to get eight new SEZ
The Kerala government is planning to forward eight applications for the establishment of Special Economic Zones (SEZ) to the centre, an official said here on Tuesday. The state already has one SEZ at Kochi, and 11 approved and two approved in principle zones. Speaking to reporters here, State Industries Minister Elamram Kareem denied reports that there had been a difference of opinion between Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan and himself over the delay in clearing 17 pending applications.

Infrastructure Kerala (InKel), a newly formed infrastructure PPP, has identified IL&FS as its chief consultant. With 74% equity from NRIs and 26% from Kerala government, the PPP had been scouting for a consultant to give technical handholding in the infrastructure projects in its basket. InKel has more than 12 mega projects at hand, InKel Chairman Elamaram Karim told FE. Kerala minister denies irregularities in titanium plant deal
Denying irregularities in the deal with a Russian company to build a 10,000-tonne titanium sponge plant at Kollam, Kerala Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem Tuesday said the cost of the project had exceeded initial estimates since the cost of land was being included in the total amount. Kareem said 100 acres of land has been acquired for the project and this, as well as the cost of additional infrstructure, has been taken into account while calculating the total cost of building the plant at Kollam, about 70 km from here.

BrahMos Aerospace (Tvm) goes live with Rs 1000-cr agenda
At least Rs 1000-crore investment will be pumped into in the new Kerala unit of BrahMos Aerospace Corporation in Kerala in next four years, according to DRDO Chief Controller and BrahMos Corp CEO A Siva Thanu Pillai.
