Higher bonus in fourteen PSUs
The workers of 14 profit-making public sector companies will be getting higher bonus and ex gratia payments this year. The bonus will range from Rs.5,000 to Rs.16,000 against Rs.2,500 to Rs.12,500 last year, depending upon performance and other parameters. Industries Minister Elamaram Karim and Labour Minister P. K. Gurudasan announced this after a conference of all concerned to settle bonus issues.

SEZs must for development: Karim
Industries Minister Elamaram Karim said here on Sunday that establishment of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) was necessary to attract Information Technology firms to the State. Presiding over a function to launch the construction activities of a new wharf at Beypore harbour, Mr. Karim said SEZs would facilitate export and hence were conducive to the IT industry. He said the State government could not afford to oppose the Central policy of allocating SEZs, especially as other States had implemented it.

Handlooms need to be operational round the year
The handloom industry, which normally finds buyers only during the festival seasons, is in for a new initiative that will enable the sector to open up to newer markets. As part of the efforts to instill more attention and lure customers, a Handloom Show and Handloom Buyer-Seller Meet are to be held in Thiruvananthapuram.

Kerala SIDCO signs pact with steel company
The Kerala Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO), a public sector unit which provides infrastructure facilities and marketing support for small industrial units in the State, has signed a memorandum of understanding with SRMB Udyog Limited, a Rs. 450-crore TMT bar manufacturing company, for marketing its products in the State. Industries Minister Elamaram Karim, speaking on the occasion, said that the tie-up signalled the beginning of the diversification of Kerala SIDCO’s activities. This State public sector company had been in loss until a couple of years ago, but it had now become one of the profit-making units under the Industries Department, he said.

New electronics park proposed in Kerala
The Kerala government will set up an electronics park in Kasargod district, state Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem said here Friday. The park will come up near the proposed strategic electronic manufacturing factory of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the foundation stone for which will be laid Saturday. Defence Minister A K Antony will lay the foundation stone for the Rs 200-crore Strategic Electronics Manufacturing Factory of the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited at Seethangoli here on Saturday. Surcharge will hurt industrial sector: Karim
The Electricity Regulatory Commission’s decision to impose a surcharge of 50 paise per unit will have a direct bearing on the industrial sector, Minister for Industries Elamaram Karim has said.
Mr.Karim told mediapersons here on Monday evening that the surcharge would be an additional burden on the industries which were already reeling under the 25 per cent power cut. The real impact had to be studied. It had been decided to revive the 10 per cent price preference scheme for small scale industrial units. The scheme was stopped by the UDF government in 2005. The scheme would be in force till March 31, 2012.

Handloom show 2008 from October 17
A Handloom Show 2008 designed to showcase the handloom products of the Trivandrum Cluster to the buyers and the textile designers from the neighbouring states would be organised for two days from October 17 in Thiruvananthapuram. Govt to appoint committee
The Government would appoint a committee to submit recommendations for saving the debt-ridden handloom cooperative societies in the State, Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem has said. Most of the societies have huge debt liability and the government was contemplating a package to overcome this crisis. HAL plans factory in Kasaragod
Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL), a premier aviation company and leading public sector undertaking, Navaratna, is planning to set up a Strategic Electronics Manufacturing factory on 200 acres of land in the Kinfra Industrial Park at Seethangoli in Kasaragod district. The HAL proposes to invest Rs.200 crore in the venture.

Electronic hubs to be set up
The government will set up electronic hubs in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi to attract electronic hardware industries to the State, Minister for Industries Elamaram Karim has said. Replying to questions in the Assembly on Monday, the Minister said the government had already identified 1,149 acres of land in Kochi for setting up the proposed hub. Denying irregularities in the deal with a Russian company to build a 10,000-tonne titanium sponge plant at Kollam, Kerala Industries Minister Elamaram Kareem Tuesday said the cost of the project had exceeded initial estimates since the cost of land was being included in the total amount. Kareem said 100 acres of land has been acquired for the project and this, as well as the cost of additional infrstructure, has been taken into account while calculating the total cost of building the plant at Kollam, about 70 km from here.
